Her hypothesis was that the use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) or acupuncture therapies will effectively decrease opioid usage in postoperative and post-surgical pain control. This is important because heroin abuse is a rising epidemic within the US. Opioid analgesics are commonly used to decrease postoperative pain levels, but put patients at risk for developing drug dependence and other side effects.
