Hamilton is an award-winning Broadway musical that tells the story of a lesser known Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton. The project evolved from a single song performed at the White House Poetry Jam in May of 2009 to an internationally renowned musical over the past 8 years. The musical first ran off-Broadway and officially opened on Broadway in August of 2015. It quickly became one of the most popular musicals of the year and has since won a Grammy, the Pulitzer Prize for drama, 11 Tony’s including best musical, and countless other accolades. The mastermind of the highly successful production Lin-Manuel Miranda not only played the lead, Alexander Hamilton, as well wrote the music and lyrics for the musical. He thought Hamilton’s story had the characteristic of the ideal immigrant story, why people came the U.S. colonies in the first place; it is a story filled with struggles and ambition. The creation and creative choices of the musical have political and social significance. Miranda highlighting issues that are relevant then and now such as race and women’s empowerment through lyrics, characters, and casting. However, “Hamilton isn’t a history book… it’s a musical,” Miranda admits this. While he did his best to remain historically accurate and unbiased, there is some level of imperfection due to freedom of creativity.
