Michelle Ko is a 21 years old female. She was originally from Korean, but moved to America with her family when she was 12 years old. She admits that adolescent was a very confusing time in her life. However, it also a very big step in her life when it come to finding her identity. In this essay, I want to focus on the gender, friendship, and culture aspect of Michelle.
When she was young she mainly takes care of her younger brother and she was a lot closer to her father than her mother. Her dad work at auto mechanic, so she typically helps out her dad with the car rather than help out at home. She mentioned that she doesn’t like cooking, but enjoy hanging out with her dad more because it is more fun. She hate to wear skirt, she added that she identify with boy a lot more even when she was young. She said when she was 18 years old, she discovered that she was a lesbian. She said that she could not bring herself to tell her parents about it because Korean is consider to be a very conservative country and being gay was very frowned upon. People still prosecuting soldiers for being gay. It is not an accepted idea at all. Even though, Korean is a conservative country, but they are pretty open minded when it come to dating in adolescence. They also have a very low teenage pregnancy rate. Korean is also very big on nationalism which explained why her parent doesn’t like it when her daughter dated people with different race.
Michelle considered culture as the most important part of the adolescence. She said that America and Korean culture is almost at the polar opposite.
