In the African-American population, religion, spiritualty, and family are valued the most. Since most African-Americans refuse professional mental health services, they may depend on religion and spirituality to overcome negative life events such as death of a love one, stress, anxiety, depression, and pain. To improve the quality of mental health services among African-Americans, medications and interventions are important. Schizophrenics take antipsychotic medication to alleviate the symptoms of schizophrenia. Although antipsychotics are essential, some clients can resist taking medications. Therefore, the task of a counselor is to develop the appropriate intervention that will be useful to the individual. Some of the most common interventions to use among schizophrenics are cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive remediation therapy, mindfulness mediation therapy, and social skills training are useful with schizophrenics. Most importantly, psychoeducation programs are also essential for schizophrenics, relatives, and the community.
