The emergence of this temple started in 675 CE, when Pacal the great (leader of the Mayan city, Palenque) started the project. The purpose of this project was to construct a tomb for Pacal after his death. As a matter of fact, since the objective was to build a tomb for Pacal, the second name of this temple is the tomb of Pacal. The walls of the temple are inscribed with glyphs that relate to the significant events at the time. From About Education, she states that, “It owes its name to the fact that its walls are covered with one of the longest carved inscription of the Mayan era, including 617 glyphs” (Maestri). On the temple, the builders created many inscriptions along the interior walls. Additionally, it has many scribes along the wall, hence the name, the Temple of the Inscriptions. Glyphs along the walls pertain to the origin since they were written at the time of construction. Furthermore, we learn glyphs were used as a writing system of the Mayans, so it gives us a way to connect with them to get a better understanding of their culture and lifestyles.
