Motivation is defined as the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. Everyone is given a general desire or willingness to do something. Motivation is what drives people to either work hard and efficiently or be negative and have a low morale. Abraham Maslow states that people are motivated to achieve a need and continue up the stages as each are fulfilled. In a brief definition, people will work harder or slower if the 5 stage needs are met. The five stage model Maslow has created that people can either move up and down are; physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization. The first stage in the model is physiological needs, which is; air, food, water, shelter and warmth. The Safety needs is the second stage and ties in with protection and overall security from the elements or any threats that may occur. Maslow’s third stage, Love and belonging, is the friendships and needed intimacy from friends, family, and other relationships. The fourth stage are the esteem needs; achievement, self-respect, and respect from others. The final stage is self-actualization, a person at this level has realized their potential and seeks personal growth and possibly peak experience. It’s important for any business to understand that their employees will not work to their full potential if their required needs are not met.
