During the first few years of being a monk, his life was difficult. A mentor approached him and told him to focus his life fully on Christ, and later on in life he would be provided with the guidance that he sought from Christ. After a few years at college he ended up getting a doctorate, becoming a professor of theology. At the beginning of the year 1513 Luther read the first line of Psalm 22 which says”My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me ,so far from my cries of anguish?” Two years later when he was preparing a lecture he read “The just will live by faith.” He studied this statement for a while, suddenly he realized he has been completely oblivious and that the key to spiritual salvation was not to fear God but to believe that faith alone would bring him salvation. This made a big change in his life and he set in the motion of reformation. At the year 1517 Pope Leo X announced that he was making new indulgences to help build Saint Peter Basilica. On the 31st day of October on the year 1517 Martin Luther went and nailed a scroll with the 95 theses on the chapel door. Luther also sent out a copy Archbishop Albert Albrecht of Mainz,demanding him to end the sale of indulgences. Martin Luther eventually got the press so help him print copies of the Ninety-Five theses throughout Germany and Europe. The church eventually agreed to help stop the act of defiance. In October 1518, Martin Luther was ordered to recant his the 95 theses to the pope. Luther’s reply was that he would not recant unless there was some scripture to prove that he was wrong. He even went to a more extreme level saying that he didn’t believe that the Papacy had the authority to interpret scripture.
