Martin Luther was born in Germany, in 1483, and spend his early days with an interest in monastic life. However, his father had plans for Martin Luther to study law in the University of Erfurt, where he obtained a master’s degree in theology (1505). In July of that same year, Martin was caught in a violent thunderstorm, where a bolt of lightning nearly struck him down. He believed that this was a sign from god, and vowed that he would become a monk if he survived the storm. When the storm subsided, Martin, true to his word, turned his back on law 5 days later and entered an Augustinian monastery.
