Today we take a trip back into time to commemorate Samuel Clemens, moralist and humorist who rose up from his small town roots to become one of America’s most beloved and influential writers of the 1800s. Better known as Mark Twain, he acquired fame through his travel narratives like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Samuel Clemens was born on November 30‚ 1835 on the banks of the Mississippi River in the mysterious and new Missouri. At the time, Missouri was a slave state and was a relatively new addition to the United States He was born following Halley’s Comet, which proved significant later in his life.
With Missouri being a slave state, Clemens spent his summer youth with his uncle’s slaves. In these slave quarters‚ he listened to the elder’s tales which sparked his love for storytelling. He was a mischievous child and later in life was quoted saying, “My mother had a great deal with trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.” Sam nearly drowned a documented nine times before he reached the age of ten.
Only completing 5th grade, he continued his schooling by teaching himself daily in the library.
