Anne’s diary begins on her thirteenth birthday, June 12, 1942, and ends shortly after her fifteenth. At the start of her diary, Anne describes fairly typical girlhood experiences, writing about her friendships with other girls, her crushes on boys, and her academic performance at school. Because anti-Semitic laws forced Jews into separate schools, Anne and her older sister, Margot, attended the Jewish Lyceum in Amsterdam. The Franks had moved to the Netherlands in the years leading up to World War II to escape persecution in Germany.…

Due to his extensive use of strong diction, Wiesel provides the reader with a more in depth understanding of his experiences. By referring to the Jewish men, women and children that were held prisoners in multiple concentration camps as “vagabonds,” Wiesel implies how overworked and miserable these individuals were. While stating that these Jews were shoved into “sealed cars, without air or water,” Wiesel gives insight into how poor of living conditions the individuals were forced to withstand. And even with the most descriptive language possible, Wiesel claims that no one will ever be able to understand what it was like to live during the Holocaust unless they had truly been there to experienced the horrors.…

The first word that I chose to best describe The Diary of Anne Frank is “optimism”. I chose this word first because it seems to be the recurring message of every chapter Anne writes. Especially towards the end of the story. For example, Anne writes about how the war will end soon for them, and that they will be home soon. It shows optimism because Anne is seeing the best of situations even in the worst of times, and not for time periods alone.…

In the memoir, “Night”, Elie Wiesel is faced with the struggles of going into concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Buna, and others in late World War II. During the holocaust, because of the lack of modern technology, no other countries knew about what was happening to the Jewish prisoners in these camps. However, Elie Wiesel was not the only one who was struck with devastation in these times of unknown crisis. Other Holocaust victims lost faith in not just their surroundings, but in themselves as well. Due to the abominable conditions of the concentration camps, Jews were both physically and psychologically damaged.…

The most surprising, interesting or useful piece of information learned through reading Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, by Eleanor Roosevelt was the difference between life in the Secret Annexe and life today. Firstly, the members of the secret annex did not get the pleasure of three meals a day unlike most people today. For example, Anne states, “We’re going to be hungry, but anything is better than being discovered” (240).…
