During World War II Americans in authority used their power to make the country go to war. Many Americans didn’t want to go to war, but it didn’t matter because leaders of the country did. Eventually, Americans feared opposing the war because they would be denounced for “for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger” (Goering). Americans accepting being manipulated into going to war is a blatant example of how fear overrides opinion. Americans were also manipulated into going to war because authority made them afraid of all Japanese people, even Japanese Americans. As seen in the Manzanar photographs, leaders created propaganda intended on making Americans fear and hate the Japanese. One sign read “Japs keep moving, this is a white man’s neighborhood”. Authority created anti-Japanese propaganda to plant fear in the American people. It’s hard for people to defend against fear because it’s the strongest and most impactful human emotion. Opposition could come from the people, who resist its leaders, or a country resisting the influence of another. North Korea has been threatened by the United States with nukes and manipulated into doing America’s bidding. North Korea took a radical step by creating their own nukes to combat America’s. After creating their own leverage, North Korea could safely say that “if the US did not abandon its tough policies towards North Korea and provoked another war, the North would fight until ‘there would be no one left to sign a surrender document’” (The Independent). To an extent, North Korea’s extreme tactic worked, and the country fell under the influence of less U.S. manipulation. Comparably, people in Ukraine fought against their own government’s manipulation through hacking. A “group claims to have obtained emails from Vladislav Surkov, a top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which detail a purported Kremlin plan to destabilize Ukraine in the coming months” (Foreign Policy). Hacking into government emails is a drastic move which shows that change, or at least awareness, can be brought to issues of manipulation. In both North Korea and Ukraine hacking story, a group was being manipulated by an outside force, but with drastic measures to expose the truth, they freed themselves from
