Westward expansion was the main goal of early Americans, and manifest destiny was their mindset. Manifest destiny is the belief that the United States was destined by God to expand across North America. In the painting, it portrays the expansion as a glorious and righteous thing, but it really was not that way for the most part. The idea of manifest destiny is one of the biggest causes of the boarding school era, the settlers wanted to conquer the Indians so that they could gain and take control of their land. In the picture we see the right side is full of light, and glory, whereas the left side is dark and gloomy. We see the whites farming, and growing crops, but on the other side we see the troubled Native Americans fleeing, in a desperate attempt to maintain the way of life they’ve always lived. In the middle of the painting, the angel is leading the way for the settlers, and lighting up the land as she goes, this symbolizes manifest destiny. During this time Indians were seen as savages, and driving them out of the area would perhaps, “clean America”. Native Americans did not think this was fair, they had lived off that land for many years and being forced out of their homeland was not something they took
