Mae Jemison was a physician, a teacher, and founder and president of two technology companies. She was born on October 17th in the year 1956. Mae Jemison contributed to space exploration by being the first African American woman into space, her technical assignments launch support activities at the Kennedy space center in Florida, and she was a mission specialist. Currently she is an advocate for science.
Jemison did well in high school, and attended Stanford University on scholarship at the age of 16. There, she attained her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in African-American studies. She went on to earn her doctorate in medicine from Cornell University in 1981. Meanwhile working as a general practitioner, Jemison served two and half years as a volunteer in the Peace Corps, spending time in the African countries of Sierra Leone and Liberia. In addition to English, she speaks Russian, Japanese, and Swahili. Even though she was employed as a general practitioner again following her return to the United States, Jemison decided to pursue a childhood dream. (Space.com). "In 1992, she flew into space aboard the Endeavour, becoming the first African American woman in space." (Space, 2018) Mae Jemison made one of her biggest accomplishment for women. When she flew into space for the first time, it was proof that women can be as smart as men in this world and even smarter. Mae Jemison probably accomplished one of her biggest goals that she has ever dreamed of in her life. She quoted " The thing that I have done throughout my life is to do the best job that I can and to be me.
