Have you ever wanted to do something but someone told you would never be able to do it? Ellen Ochoa was the first hispanic female to go to space in 1993. This changed the way that people thought about who could do what. Ellen Ochoa had an impact on space exploration in America by being the first hispanic female astronaut. We learn about the quality of determination when studying the life of Ellen Ochoa.
Ellen Ochoa was born on May 10, 1958 to Joseph and Rosanne Ochoa. She was born in Los Angeles, California. Ellen gets her hispanic heritage from her dad. She has 3 brothers and 1 sister. She along with 4 other eager astronauts were ready to go to space on the Discovery. In orbit, Ellen took lots of pictures of the oceans and continents on Earth for further research. Ellen can remember never getting tired of the view. “The most exciting thing was looking out at the Earth from up there. It was beautiful.” Ellen Ochoa said once to a writer at Encyclopedia.com. Ellen Ochoa has been to space four times and total of about 950 hours in space. Her first mission the Discovery in 1993 was a 9 day mission of making observations of the sun and the Earth’s atmosphere. Ellen was in charge of the robot arm used to release and retrieve a satellite that collected information. Her second mission was just a year later in 1994. She was aboard the Atlantis. She was awarded with NASA highest awards, the Distinguished Service medal and the Distinguished Rank Award for Senior Executives in the Federal Government. She also has five school across the country named after her. Because she was the first hispanic female to go to space she has created opportunities for other biracial student in the country and that is what makes her an inspiration.
Today Ellen Ochoa is married to Coe Miles and has two sons, Wilson and Jordan. She lives in Houston, Texas where she is the director of the Johnson Space Center.
