Loneliest Character In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Who is the loneliest character in the book Of Mice and Men? Crooks is the loneliest character. Crooks is mainly lonely because of his color. The setting in this book is around the great depression, and that is when segregation was allowed and racism was widespread. During this time period, whites were considered higher than blacks and usually got better things than them. That explains why Crooks sleeps in a room in the stable by himself, while the other men sleep in the bunkhouse. Crooks is also the loneliest character because him and Candy have been working on the same ranch for many years and have never spoken to each other. The only person that Crooks talked to is Lennie, until Candy came into the stable with them. But, Crooks still never really gets acknowledged until people want something, like when they needed his gun to kill lennie, or when the men were talking about his crooked back. …show more content…
Crooks is never invited to do things with the other group of men because of his race. on page 68, Lennie asks Crooks why isn’t he wanted in the bunkhouse, Crooks replies by saying “Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black.” This is another reason why Crooks is the loneliest character. Nobody likes him, just because of his race. Only Lennie had no problem talking to Crooks, but Lennie can talk to anybody and doesn’t care about skin color or the way that they look. There may be other characters in the story that are lonely, but at least they are accepted because of their race, No matter how nice and cool a person that crooks is, he may never be accepted, just because of his skin
