Linda Brent was a remarkable woman with incredible strength. To comprehend her strength, you must first understand the characters that molded her into the woman she is. Without Mrs. Bruce, Linda wouldn’t have learned to trust the white society in the North. Bruce stands up for Linda when she is faced with prejudice. Mrs. Bruce sees Linda as an equal, so she wants her to have the same treatment as the other nurses while they are out on vacation. When Mrs. Bruce sees Linda isn’t able to get cups like the other nurses, she gives Linda hers. In the novel Mrs. Bruce says “"Take my arm, Linda, and we'll go in together."(264). I believe at this moment Linda felt she wasn’t fighting a battle alone. This gave Linda a sense of self-worth, because it helped her realize some whites care and want to genuinely help. Consequently, this showed Linda she wasn’t like the whites she had encountered before; she cared enough to sacrifice for her. Linda sees Mrs. Bruce is willing to stand up for her, thus giving Linda the boost she needed to stand up for herself. Mrs. Bruce transfer the voice she has onto Linda. In the world Linda is accustomed to woman are submissive and have little to no voice. Mrs. Bruce introduces Linda to a world where women are able to speak for themselves and stand up for what they believe in. This is a critical moment in the novel because Linda now realizes she can trust her. Bruce Linda wouldn’t be the woman she became. Mrs. Bruce was the only woman that would allow her a job without a reference. This speaks volumes to Mrs. Bruce as a trusting woman. If she didn’t give Linda this opportunity, Linda wouldn’t have the money she needed to take care of herself or her children. Watching the Relationship Mrs. Bruce has with her child and the way she scarified for her made Linda want to work even harder for her children. Linda trusting Mrs. Bruce opened a lot of opportunities for herself. She was able to share her experience and not live in fear of being captured while at work. Linda also discovers she is very similar to Mrs. Bruce; her freedom is limited because of gender just like Linda. Mrs. Bruce treats Linda with a kindness she’s never experienced which makes her open up to her. Linda realizes not all white people in the world are cruel like the whites in the South. Before this Linda had to assume that all whites were against her, but Mrs. Bruce helps her realize there are some good ones and you have to be optimistic.
