Yann Martel is the author of Life of Pi, and he wrote a story about Pi’s early childhood and the shipwreck that changed his life. Pi Patel is the protagonist of the book who is raised in a Hindu family, but he devotes himself to Christianity and the Islamic religion. He survives 277 days in a lifeboat with Richard Parker, a 450 pound Royal Bengal tiger after the Japanese ship sinks in the Pacific Ocean. Pi is separated from his family. I chose a passage from chapter 16 because Pi’s belief in God helps him to survive at sea. From this chapter, Pi Patel learns that it doesn’t matter what religion you believe, but he finds all religions share the same fundamental love of God.

She heard “Hairless Christians”, and that is what they were to hear for many years. When I corrected her, I told her that in fact she was not wrong; that Hindus, in their capacity for love, are indeed hairless Christians, just as Muslims, in that way they see God in everythings, are bearded Hindus, and Christains, in their devotion to God, are hat-wearing Muslim. This statement tells that all religions share the similar ideology of God to their followers. Each religion has its own way to celebrate. For example: Christians pray in church, Muslims pray in a mosque or pray at home, and Hindus pray in the temple. It seems that faith and belief is important in each religion. First, when Pi is in the ocean, he prays regularly. This provides him with support, and he feels a connection with God, and this makes his time go fast. For example, Pi doesn’t have to church, mosque, and temple to pray his prayer, but he can practice his religion from the ocean. He prayed more than he needs and his faith toward God increase constantly and connected deep trust to God. Pi thought the blackness would stir and eventually go away, and God would remain, shining point of light in his heart. Second, Pi has faced lots of issues with the tiger to stay alive in the ocean because of lack of food, seasickness, and the ocean waves. For example, a tiger is a carnivore mammal, and it needs meat to survive in the ocean. Pi don’t have any choice, but he eats small amounts from his storage, and then he starts coughing fish from the ocean to tiger to feed. Sometime Pi has to prepare for the Mother Nature disaster in the ocean. Third, Pi survives the whole journey because God is with him and provides him the power to fight for survival. For example, Pi doesn’t want to die in the ocean because he thought God is with him. He believes God helps him to survive from his journey. After Pi’s survival from the ocean, he continued to tell his story to other people, but most of people didn’t accept his miraculous journey from India to Canada.
