While the queen is surrounded by the signs of wealth and power, her past can be seen in the way she interacts with the viewer. She’s facing the viewer directly, but her stare is the stare of someone who has had a rough day and is ready to turn in. While her life now might be one of ease and luxury, she once had to actively rule a country and care for its citizens. Leibovitz seems to have captured the heavy load of what it means to be a monarch in the content of the photograph. In regards to the use of light within the shot, the gradual decrease of light in the background could be symbolic of the queen’s past. The shadowy corridor in the background could be a representation of the past and the light from the door is a look into her future.
