La llena is an equine center located in La Llacuna, outside of Barcelona, Spain. It functions as both an equine center and family home. It was designed by Vincent Sarrablo and Jaume Colom and finished in 2015. The structure includes stables in the lower portion, living spaces above, and a metal structure with a gabled roof that covers the project. Building on the site of the previous structure allowed them to reuse the foundation and wood from the barn that had been there before. They used plywood for load bearing walls, partitions and the curved roofing. They used thin plywood so that they could bend the material on site. We wanted to incorporate its open feel to bridge the gap between the natural environment and the interior space of the equine center. Incorporating large windows is one simple, yet effective, way to accomplish this. They allow plenty of natural sunlight and views of the landscape in the area. To embrace the idea of an open design, we added a central courtyard. It provides natural views both inside and outside of the center. Wood was the dominant material of La Llena giving it a warm and natural feel which can also enable someone to connect better with their environment. In the case of the Phoenix Center, it also allows them to open themselves up and combat the troubles they are facing. Having a view of nature and natural light are two simple notions that can go a long way in design and fuel recovery when it comes to healthcare and
