King Kamehameha the Great (1758-1819) was Hawaii's most powerful king. Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kamehameha participated in numerous battles in his early years. After he became ruler of the Big Island, his next goal was to rule all the other islands as well. In 1795 his warriors arrived on Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Oahu and later Kauai, defeating the local rulers of these islands. In that year Kamehameha conquered and unified the Hawaiian Islands. It was also one of the most important event that happened in Hawaiian history because after these, there was a peace in a nation. They wouldn’t tell I’m from big island or I’m from Honolulu they could say they are from Hawaii. Kamehameha’s unification of Hawaii was significant not only because it was an incredible feat, but also because under separate rule, the Islands may have been torn apart by competing western interests. Today, iconic statues honor King Kamehameha’s memory, the most famous King Kamehameha statue stands across the street from Iolani palace on Oahu. If he wouldn’t have unified the islands then it would be easy for the imperialized nations to capture and use their power early in 1800s. Many good events took place between 1821 to 1840. Some of them were Honolulu Police Department was founded by King Kamehameha III in 1934 and the first sugar plantation was established on Kauai Island in 1935. This events helped hawaii a lot because after police department was founded many crimes were stopped. According to hawaii.gov, “A total of 46,797 Index Crimes were reported statewide in 2012, yielding a rate of 3,361 offenses per 100,000 resident population.” This just shows how much crimes takes place in just a year even though there are police and laws. Imagine no police and laws,what would people not do. There would be murders in every street. So, establishing a Honolulu Police department was a very important event. Violence were decreasing in society. Peace is always what people want so it was good for people and government as well. Sugar plantation also changed the lifestyle of Hawaiian people. After sugar plantation got established many people started working. They were able to make some money for their family and live more luxuriously.
