Richard Rodriguez was part of a Mexican family, that struggled with money. His mother had instructed him not to write in his books so eventually they could sell them “In our house each school year would begin with mothers carefully instructed don't write in your books so we can sell them at the end of the year “(2).He struggled with reading so he started reading out loud. Mark didn't like the idea of school, and started hanging out with the bad kids. One day his mother dragged him to school, he saw how much his struggle his mom went through to see him get an education. Later that day his mom and dad got in a fight which lead to his mom getting badly injured. His mother told him “I want you to have a future, child, and contrary to what your father says. School is the only means to a future. I don't want you to grown up to be like your father”(9).
