Personally, I don't blame Luis for making these difficult decisions because many times he didn’t have a choice whether or not to do the things he did. When Luis came to the United States and started school, he hardly understood English, let alone speak it. When he started school, one of Luis’s teachers always said that she couldn't teach children that didn’t even speak English so she just ignored Luis. On page 26, Luis Rodriguez says, “ She complained about not having room, about kids who didn’t even speak the language, and how was she supposed to teach anything under these conditions!Although I didn’t speak English, understood a large part of what she was saying. I knew I wasn’t wanted. She put me in an old creaky chair near the door. As soon as I could, I sneaked out to find my mother.” Another point in the book where Luis says he has no control in his life is after he gets evicted from his old apartment because his older sister Senu stabbed her husband with a nail filer after accusing him of having an affair with another woman. After the incident, his mother and father divorced and were on their way back to Mexico. Luis says, “ I’ve been a red hot ball, bouncing around from here to there. Anyone can bounce me. Mama. Dad. Rano. Schools. Streets. I’m a ball. Whatever.” (Rodriguez, p. 33). This quote goes to show that Luis is admitting that he had no control over his life and decisions because everyone else made the decisions for him. He couldn’t control his life because he was a young child and couldn’t do much to change what he could do. This was like a path to a life of other people making decisions for him and having no other choice but to join the life of
