In the article, Catton briefly stated some comparison concerning Lee and Grant, as well. One of the similarities that he mention was they were both determined to end the war peacefully. This comparison can be proven when Catton stated, “To turn quickly from the war to peace once the fighting was over . . . in the end, help the two sections to become one nation again,” concerning Lee and Grant. These quotes support the author believes the main similarities between Lee and Grant was both two strong men physically and mentally to protect their people.…
“We honor our past because it shapes our future,” this is one of the many quotes that Otterbein University holds dearly. Otterbein University holds this value greatly. Otterbein gives equality to all students, faculty, and others since 1847. Before any women’s rights and the abolishment of slavery, Otterbein University allowed people of color and women to receive a fair and equal education. Otterbein University is a mid-sized college located in Westerville, Ohio.…

According to the text, it alleged that there was a slave named Dred Scott, who was apparently born in Southhampton County, Va around 1790. Scott was a slave, and the property of the Peter Blow family. Furthermore, the text suggest that Dred Scott was passed around to several different slave owners, one of which lived in territories that prohibited slave ownership. For example, the text points out that Scott Dred was sold to John Emerson who worked throughout Illinois, and the Wisconsin territories, under which the Northwest Ordinances prohibited slavery.…
The Emancipation Proclamation legally freed the slaves in states that were not under Union control as a reaction to the Dred Scott case. Lincoln’s motive behind the issuance of the Proclamation remains one of the most debated topic of the president. In the famous Lincoln-Douglass Debate in Charleston (National Historic SiteIllinois), Lincoln claimed that he “as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race” when asked to talk about his opinion about the equality between the black people and the white people. This led to the theory that Lincoln was a white-suprematist in nature, but still signed the Proclamation in order to win the war.…
The Annexation of Texas caused great contempt and division among Americans, and arguments defending both sides were abundant. John O’Sullivan’s argument for the Annexation of Texas is superior compared to Thomas Corwin’s argument. O’Sullivan utilizes facts, the spirit of America, the antithesis, and the history of other foreign countries in America make a strong argument. O’Sullivan begins by declaring that Texas belongs to America. Texas is no longer a mere plot of land; it is American (O’Sullivan 1).…
In previous decades, U.S. citizens had little choice about what to watch on television – everybody watched the same news shows and had access to the same information. Now, there is a plethora of shows available every night. Several studies show that people who hold more liberal beliefs seek out more liberal media, and people who hold more conservative beliefs seek out more conservative media – media that reinforces their current political beliefs. Meanwhile, those people that consider themselves to be moderates, and more likely, those who are not interested in U.S. politics, often choose to completely forego political news. The public push for more extreme media, and the more extreme media may be influencing Congress (Levendusky, 2014).…
The Supreme Court, as Justice Madison puts it, is the Supreme interpreter of the law, and all laws that are not constitutional must be strike down. Brandeis also thinks this way. He thinks the interpreter of the law has supervisory powers. They must be impartial and not allow a citizen or government official to break the law. If citizens break the law, then the appropriate punishment applies according to the statutes; however, if the government breaks the law, then sanctions applies to uphold the integrity of the law.…
Within this essay, I will argue that Galen Strawson’s basic argument, presented in Your Move: The Maze of Free Will, is correct about the impossibility of ultimate moral responsibility. I will do this by first explaining the basic argument as proposed by Strawson, then raising an objection to it concerning the distinction between the self and the way you are by denying the second premise. And finally, I will be refuting the objection. Strawson’s basic argument can be boiled down to the simple notion that one cannot be ultimately morally responsible. He claims that anything you do in any circumstance is an effect of who you are, and the way you are.…
Jennifer Jerit and Jason Barabas conducted a study that inspected the interaction between the information environment and the motivation to learn the information by constructing questions based off of low or high media coverage to either the Democrats or Republicans with information with positive or negative implications. They found that the level of knowledge for Democrats and Republicans was higher for information with positive implications for their party and lower for information with negative implications, namely, the proportion of correctly answered questions for Democrats varied from 0.41 to 0.45 for questions with positive implications and 0.35 for those with negative implications, with similar results for Republicans. To highlight the difference in how well a question was answered depending on its implication, 75% of Republican participants correctly stated that President Bush won Congress’ approval to use military force against Iraq (sheds party in a positive light), but only 43% of them were aware that the Bush Administration did not publicly release evidence of Iraq’s involvement in the planning and funding of 9/11 attacks (not so positive). The results from this political study clearly display that one is more willing to learn facts that are consistent with their views and less willing to learn facts that challenge them. Similarly, when Drew Weston, affiliated with the Department of Psychology and Department of Psychiatry at Emory University, and his team observed the reasoning processes that dedicated partisans undergo when viewing threatening information about their candidates and opposing candidates during the 2004 U.S. Presidential election, they found that…
Kwan argues that religious experience can offer prima facie justification, or PFJ. He defines PFJ as follows: “An experience has PFJ if the claims of the experience are probably true unless there are positive reasons to the contrary” (Kwan 507). He will frame the argument in terms of justification for the individual having the experience; he is not arguing that everyone should believe in God on the basis of religious experience. Rather, if the argument succeeds, it will show that those who have had religious experiences of God (of the right sort) have prima facie justification for belief in God. Kwan’s argument is based on what he calls the principle of critical trust, or PCT, which is derived from his notion of prima facie justification.…
Large, brand name companies are pushing for the internet to enforce real name identification systems. They suggest that those systems will cut down on cyber-bullying, racist comments, and other unwanted internet speech. Robert Bodle, who comes across as a strong privacy advocate, argues against these types of systems. He believes that these systems infringe upon freedom of speech and expression. He mentions the large number of people who use the internet as a place to discuss ideas without fear of being wrong or being persecuted.…
Summary John Arthurs has a unique stance on world hunger and moral obligation and the way that we should handle these issues. He opens up his argument by analyzing one of Pete Singers rules “If it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening, without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it. “(666) Arthur believes that rule of life is a flawed one. He counters this statement by giving a scenario using Singers moral rule. Arthur states “All of us could help others by giving away or allowing others to use our bodies.…
When the word argument is mentioned what comes to mind, a fight or altercation? Philosophy has a different definition of an argument. It has nothing to do with being violent or verbally abusive to the contender. An argument is a process of reasoning from one claim to another. An argument supports your ideas with justification from other ideas, principles, and observations to establish your conclusions and overcome objections.…
