Introduction: The Effect of Running Shoes on Lower Extremity Joint Torques, explains the two-condition experimental comparison of running shoes on 68 healthy young adults. The experiment measures data related to joint torques, specifically at the hip, knee, and ankle. The experimental process included participants first running on a treadmill barefoot, and again with running shoes. Pressure, rotation torque and joint torque were measured and compared between the two testing methods. The objective of this article is, “To determine the effect of modern-day running shoes on lower extremity joint torques of running” (Kerrigan). We have learned that the knee is the most complex joint system in our bodies. The knee contains the most mobile joints, but these joints are less stable and more susceptible to injury. We talked about the development of osteoarthritis. As Dr. Presley says, osteoarthritis is the “normal wear and tear” of joints in the body. As an athlete it is terrifying to learn about the inevitable deterioration of my body. As often as I wear running shoes, I believe it would be beneficial to create a running shoe that could potentially decrease joint deterioration even at the slightest. The first shoes that came to mind when reading this article were Sketchers “Shape-Ups”. The idea of Sketchers “Shape-Ups” was interesting and innovative. A strength walking shoe, that increases shock absorption, increases weight loss and helps maintain good posture. I thought it was interesting that the focus group for this product was middle aged women. As we talked about in class, women have higher risk of bone, muscle and joint weakening.
