Of Mice And Men Utopian Analysis

A Utopia normally has a associated with a place where people can live at ease without having to worry in life. It’s often a person 's dream to obtain their own personal Utopias where they believe they can be happy. The book Of Mice and Men by John steinbeck is about 2 men who travel to a ranch for work. On this ranch they meet all different people with different struggles and dreams. However a lot the people on the ranch seem to have one thing in common, they have failed their dreams and are currently living miserably. George, Lennie and Curley’s wife all had dreams that they were unable to achieve. She kept holding on to this hope that someday she can maybe achieve this personal Utopia. This hope help her persevere through her troubles in life but she fails and her life ends miserably. When she was younger, people had said she had the talent to be in the movies. This gave her hope to be famous, own nice clothes and live her Utopian life. She wanted to live the American dream where she could be self innovative and not have have any worries. When talking to Lennie she tells him “‘...I met a guy, an’ he was in pitchers. Went out to the Riverside Dance Palace with him. He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural. Soon’s he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write to me… I never got that letter,’ she said. ‘I always thought my ol’ lady stole it.’”(page 88) She did things such as getting in contact with people in the movie business however it never worked out. Even though she felt a bit discouraged she continues to things to solve her problems because she still had the hope that her dreams could come true. Curley’s wife felt as if her dreams were being blocked by her mother who did not approve of her wanting to be an actress. She eventually marries Curley because she wants to get away from her mom and get closer to her dream. This keeps him them hopeful for a day they won’t have to live in suffering. George tells Lennie that in their Utopia “Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be no more trouble. Nobody gonna hurt nobody nor steal from ‘em.” ( page 106) This shows that all George and Lennie want is to be living peacefully and happily and believe that their dream can fulfill that.. Their dream of this Utopia gave them hope that it could really happen. George and Lennie are best friends since childhood. They travel together all the time. George has to take care of his friend Lennie because he is mentally disabled. George says to Lennie “But you ain’t gonna get in no trouble, because if you do, I wont let you tend the rabbits,” (page 16). Originally George didn’t believe that their dream was possible and only used it to get Lennie to listen but then as he talked about it with Lennie, felt more and more real. This gave him hope that it would be possible for them to achieve their dream. George and Lennie used this dream to maintain the sense of hope that it would be possible for them to live happily. George used this dream to keep Lennie on task because both wanted for this Utopia to come true. They worked hard for the money and thought that if they got the little place, life would be like a Utopia.
