Crooks is affected on the ranch by racism. Crooks is not aloud to sleep in the same building as the other workers in fact he sleeps in with the horses.
“They play cards in there, but I can’t cause I’m black“
At this part of the story, all the workers finish there day with a game of cards. But they exclude Crooks from the game because of the colour of his skin. She is the only woman in the ranch and she is never payed attention to. Even when she was killed, Curley was more bothered about killing Lennie. She is seen as constantly ‘looking for trouble’. In fact the workers don’t like her that much that they don’t even know her own name (Although this might be Curley’s fault).
“You can talk to people but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley”.
When she says this in the short story, she is talking to Lennie about how she get lonely. Her dream is to be in the pictures (Movies). She is told that this will be possible after she is told that she can be the next big thing and that she would get a letter about it. She thinks that her mother received the letters but threw them away to stop her from going. At this point her dream is basically ruined. She married Curley impulsively, our of spite for her mother and to escape her mother’s authority. So Curley does not let anyone talk to her as she is very flirtations with the other workers
In conclusion, the novella ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck is set in the 1930’s focuses on the minority groups of Sexism, Ageism and Racism. These minority groups are not shown the same respect and are at a very big disadvantage of achieving there dreams of being involved with the other workers (Crooks), being a movie star (Curley’s wife) and having job security
