According to Gelso and Fretz (as cited in Nauta, 2010) “Helping people make career decisions have been fundamental to counseling psychology since its emergence as a profession, and it continues to be central to its identity today”. John Holland theorized a concept which would be used to help people find their own career interests, make their own career decisions, find how to obtain information about the career and how to structure their career education (Schreuder & Coetzee, 2016).

Then they start looking for a career which best suits their personality type, in which the environment will also resemble and assist in making their occupational life much more satisfying, all in provisions of individual’s personality type, allowing people to venture in satisfying and stay in occupations which are comparable to one’s personality type. One’s behaviour can be determined by their interaction with different characteristics, circumstances, and personalities which are found in the environment which they choose as their career path (Schreuder & Coetzee, 2016).
Here are the personality types, as defined by Schreuder and Coetzee (2016):
Realistic: A person who has a realistic personality trait is normally shy, is a conformist, shows a lack of self-insight, is materialistic in things such as money, power and status and the person is somewhat uninvolved. In a career setting, such a person takes on more realistic career paths which allow them to be practical like being a miner, a locksmith, hairdresser, an engineer and a computer programmer.
Investigative: Occupationally, such a person takes on occupations which may include being a psychologist, a physiologist, an engineer, an advocate, an economist or a choreographer. On a much more personal level, this individual is cautious, introspective, independent, …show more content…
This individual may be found in occupations such different types of educational and social work, an occupational or speech or beauty therapist and as a librarian.
Enterprising: This person is the type to be adventurous, domineering, impulsive, dependent, optimistic and energetic. This person may be manipulative towards others in order to reach a specific personal goal. This kind of an individual may be found in business, marketing, fashion, banking, managing, may also be an attorney, an auctioneer, and a public relations officer.
Conventional: Occupationally, this person takes on a career such as bookkeeping, being a receptionist, an office worker, an accountant, a bank official, a financial expert and an educator in commercial subjects in the educational system. Such a person may be a conformist, is practical, lacks imagination, is persistent, may be prudish and would be described as best at handling
