Synopsis
To start off, Luke 10:25-37 shares the parable of the Good Samaritan as told by Jesus. Jesus tells the story of a Jewish man that was walking down from Jerusalem to Jericho. This man was attacked by robbers, stripped of his clothes, and left beaten in a ditch at the point where he was half dead. This man was in dire need of help. A priest happened to walk down the same road and saw the man in the ditch. However, the priest continued to keep walking and did not help the man. A Levite also walked …show more content…
The priest was essentially the guardian of the holy place. It was the priest’s responsibility to take the blame for any lapse that happened in the sanctuary. When it comes to the Levites, they were the rank right below a priest in the Jewish religion. The Levites had several different roles within the temple. Among other things, they were the gatekeepers, they collected annual taxes, and they assisted in temple services. Although the priest and the Levite are Jewish just like the injured man, they refused to help him. Their behavior and actions are viewed as not admirable as they neglected one of their own, showing that they felt like he was not worth their help. The injured man was finally helped by the Samaritan. The Samaritan is of a Hebrew focused religion that originated from the Mosaic religion just like the Jews. Even though the Jews and Samaritans were similar, they had different views. This led them to build two separate temples to separate the religions among their respective communities. Samaritans are viewed as social outcasts to the Jewish religion because of their views. The Samaritan is the opposite of the priest and the Levite. He was unselfish and concerned for the man unlike the priest and Levite, and aided him for two whole days to make sure he was okay. This shows that even though he had different views of the man, he still knew he needed help …show more content…
Jesus wants to make it clear that all men were created equal by God. The characters in the parable are all equal in the eyes of God. The priest and the Levite neglected the man as they felt he was not worth of their help. The priest and Levite were supposed to help the injured man because they were Jewish like him. Instead a Samaritan helped the man because he was unselfish. It is selfish to neglect someone in need of help. By doing tasks for humanity, it will raise your status within your religion and make you a better person. Jesus wants everyone to realize that everyone was made equal, thus those in need should receive the help needed regardless of who they are or where they come
