In fact, my inspiration for the collection I am working on for my senior showcase comes directly from Uelsmann. I find Uelsmann’s work to be truly remarkable since all of his photographs were processed and created in the darkroom. I have a great appreciation for his craftsmanship, as he did not have access to Photoshop to create his photographs. In addition, I greatly appreciate his process as creating a beautiful photograph yet alone a mysterious, compelling composition in the darkroom takes an enormous amount skill and patience. He is very well educated and has earned three degrees, a B.F.A, M.S. and an M.F.A. Uelsmann has numerous fellowships, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967 and the other a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1972. In addition, he has had over 100 individual shows and has permanent collections in many museums around the world. Uelsmann says his main influences come from his teachers Beaumont Newhall, Minor White, Ralph Hattersley and his classmates Bruce Davidson, Pete Turner, Carl Chiarenza and Peter Bunnell.
