Sometimes in life people are faced with difficult choices. They may feel torn between which one to choose even when they may know which one is the right choice. In that very moment a decision is made that can possibly change the path of life forever. In the stories of Jamal Faison and Kellie Phelan I will take you on a journey of two very different people who made a choice that would subsequently lead to their arrest and prison sentence at one of the United States most notorious prisons. At this young age Jamal was transitioning developmentally from late adolescent to early adulthood, which indeed played a part in his choice that day. She was convicted and sent to Rose M. Singer Center on Rikers Island which housed a twenty five bed nursery where she raised her child until her release. In this particular story her daughter Savannah asked her mother questions about why she was in jail. Kellie explains to her daughter that she had an injury which then resulted in her mother abusing drugs and then later being arrested. Kellie also goes on to talk about her own life and how things were more difficult for her in regards to her education which caused her to fail later in life. This statement could identity that she may have had a disability in school that was not formally assessed which may have made her formative years more difficult. Due to the importance of early intervention on childhood development this could have had a significant impact on her education. Furthermore poverty can also be an indictor of risk for children under the age of six due to its strong interaction with the environment at home.
