Wood based paper has been and continues to be the primary type of paper consumed and produced by the United States of America. Most Americans are un-aware however that there is an alternative to the current wood based paper processes which entails chopping down the world’s forests to produce paper products. The alternative to wood based paper products is hemp based paper. Hemp based paper products are an environmentally friendly and cost effective alternative to wood based paper that should be utilized by the United States of America.
Unbeknownst to many in America, hemp has historically been grown and farmed all around the world even in America. “The word "hemp" comes out of Western Europe as a description of a number of varieties of the cannabis plant, particularly the varieties like "industrial hemp" that were bred over time for industrial uses such as fuel, fiber, paper, seed, food, oil, etc.”(The Forgotten History of Industrial Hemp). Modern culture in America greatly overlooks Hemps importance in history and the impacts it had on early civilizations. The farming of hemp for its industrial purposes, “goes back 12,000 years, and, while it was native to Asia, it was grown in, and had an enormous influence upon, many of the ancient and more modern cultures, and on the history of Europe and America”( The Forgotten History of Industrial Hemp).
