The research topic I would like to investigate in this literature review is what people’s perceptions about interracial relationships are?” I am specifically interested in “How do people differ in their perceptions based on their social statuses? “ Another sub question is “To what extent does organizational participation hinder interracial relationships?”

In order to find sources for my background information I used the sources available through the library website. I used JSTOR to search for articles. In America the topic of interracial relationships, and dating has had a tough time legally and socially through our history. In the first half of our country’s existence slavery was legal, and caused huge divisions between blacks and whites. Additionally, other races weren’t very popular with a large number of citizens in America. The United States went to war with Mexico fighting over land in the Mexican-American war. Asian immigrants were treated poorly, and performed very dangerous work, such as building the transcontinental railroad. At times immigrants from different countries were seen negatively when they came to the country. Virginia in 1967. It was not a legal option across the whole country to date someone and marry them legally. (McClain) 2011 stated “The broader social acceptance of interracial romance saw its beginnings in the early to mid-1960s, before the 1967 Supreme Court decision in Loving vs. Virginia, and coincident with the major advances of the civil rights movement”. Although something is legal it does not make it socially acceptable. As a result of tensions between races, some people do not think that people should date outside their race. Society doesn’t change overnight, and today there are still mixed feelings on the subject.
Without the historical background information on interracial relationships, you cannot understand the topic. If you did not know that interracial marriage was illegal at one point in America you would be at a loss as to why people think of it the way they do sometimes. If you were unaware of slavery and poor conditions that other groups and races endured, you would understand a lot of perceptions. Along with these pieces of historical knowledge it is important to note the importance of the civil rights moments in the area of interracial dating and
