Beauty In African American Culture

Every culture throughout the world has a different perception of what beauty. Some cultures, such as the African American culture for example, express beauty by showing off wealth and expensive features. In an image captured by C.E. Gomes, there is a Swahili woman posing gracefully with several extravagant accessories, such as multiple necklaces around the neck of the woman, along with a bracelet on each of the woman’s wrists. The clothing style of the Swahili woman is very elegant, with intricate designs and patterns displayed both on the dress and on the headpiece, which completely hides her hair. (C.E. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the majority of the population of white men and women harassed and tortured African American men and women for decades. African Americans were not allowed to drink from the same water fountain, use the same facilities, go to the same schools, and the idea of actually having a relationship with an African American man or women was completely out of the question. Obviously, African Americans did not have the same rights and opportunities as white men and women. However, a white man and an African American woman fell in love and took it upon themselves to become wedded. On July 11th, 1958, Richard and Mildred Loving were lying in bed, not too long after becoming married, and three armed police officers stormed into the room and arrested them both and were thrown in jail, where Mildred remained for several days, all because of simply marrying and falling in love with a white man. () Along with Americans not being accepting of African American women, interracial relationships, and failing to observe the true beauty African Americans hold. For example, every advertisement, whether it was for a beauty product or an industrial product, only white actors will model for the product. For example, in the past, white men have not been accepting at all of African American women just because of the color of their skin. As previously stated, there have been attempts at interracial relationships in the past when racism and segregation still heavily dominated the world. However, In today’s society, Americans and African Americans have come together and have overcome the differences of culture and appearance and have become committed to interracial relationships. There are several interracial couples that exist in the world today and are happy and satisfied with their partner and think that their partners are even more beautiful than white women. For example, there was an interracial couple, the woman being African American, along with several other ethnicities, and the man being white, that posted on a website for interracial relationships about how well the relationship was going so far and the their feelings about each other.
