As first lady, Laura traveled alone to Europe, spoke on radio in support of the Afghan people, and agreed to argue before a Senate committee on education. In a further historic vein, she also organized a national book fair including American authors, began the Laura Bush Foundation to increase funds for libraries, and won praise for her achievements to comfort victims of the September 11 attacks of 2001.
