How much of our life do we really have control over? This topic is covered in The Magic of the Unconscious: Automatic Brain which contemplates just how much humans are actually aware of and how much we genuinely decide. The video goes into an in-depth analysis of the automatic brain. It shows just how complicated the many processes the human brain goes through each day, in fact at every second. Humans are immensely unaware of how powerful and controlling the automatic brain is.…
The stimulus activity that I chose to do was making valentine sugar cookies with two of my nieces. I originally was only going to do this with my seven year old niece Eliza, but decided to let her younger sister, Lucy who is five, also join us. Overall, the stimulus activity of making and frosting sugar cookies went great. I didn’t think they would be as open as they had been because they are both really shy and usually only talk to the other kids. However, they were both engaged and enjoyed it because they had been able to frost cookies before but had never had the opportunity to help mix the batter, cut them out, and bake them before.…
In his article “The Experience Machine”, Nozick (1974) offers a thought-experiment which people can get any experience which they desire in a experience machine. In this paper, I argue that people should not plug into the experience machine. If I have a choice to plug into the experience machine, depending on my quality of life, I may or may not enter it. In Nozick’s description (1974), the experience machine can give people any experience that they desire.…
The Cognitive Perspective is considered to be a relatively new or modern approach in the field of psychology in regards to the study human behavior that started gaining attention around the late 1950s leading to what is also known as the “Cognitive Revolution” during which the definition of psychology started to deviate from the inclination to be classified as a study of behaviour given that pre-1950s, psychology was deemed as the study of behaviour by experimental psychologists who were influenced by the work of psychologists going along the lines of Pavlov’s work which emphasized on behaviorism arguing that the most objectively observable evidence is that which can be seen externally i.e., behavioral (Miller, 2003) The cognitive perspective allowed researches to come up with conclusions regarding the characteristics of cognitive processes through the observation of certain behaviours in terms of consistency in behaviour, measurable by the rate of forgetting and reaction. The major emphasis of the cognitive perspective leans towards the study of cognitive function as the name suggests or in other words, the study of mental processes inclusive of but not limited to; attention, memory, language, perception and thinking. (McLeod, S. A. 2008)…
In their work, The Extended Mind, Andy Clark and David Chalmers present the extended mind hypothesis to argue against the idea of the mind consisting solely of inputs and outputs. The hypothesis argues that the mind is not simply an internal thing, but rather that it can exist externally and be part of an individual’s environment. Clark and Chalmers argue for this this by presenting the examples of Otto, a man whose memories and knowledge lie in a notebook, and Inga someone who stores all the information in her mental states. I will argue that the extended mind hypothesis is unsuccessful because there is no clear line of what is actually known and what is only thought to be known. The extended mind hypothesis is the argument that…
Geiselman et al compared their cognitive interview with a standard interview technique on 51 volunteer participants from a wide demographic background. Participants watched two films of violent crimes and 48 hours later were interviewed by trained police officers using either a standard interview or a cognitive interview. The results showed a significant increase in the number of correct items recalled using the cognitive interview, and a small decrease in the number of confabulated items, this research was, of course, lacking in ecological validity as participants watched filmed incidents. Bekerian & Dennet reviewed 27 studies into the effectiveness of the cognitive interview schedule and found that the cognitive interview provided more accurate information than other interview techniques.…
Perception As critical thinking individuals we are given the power of choice and free will; the ability to decide if we prefer the left path or the right dictating our journeys as we grow older in knowledge and mind. Choices that are customized to reflect directly on our values, morals and beliefs; like a descriptive manuscript written in stone which depicts who we are in the depths of our personal abyss, stating what makes us different than others around us. But what happens when our sense of moral is tested, when a conflict so great challenges our understanding of who we are; and we are made to pick one of two lesser evils. A switch goes off immediately which makes us question the decision to be made in terms of everything we stand for and…
The first process is when nerves in the skin sense something harmful and communicate that information to the spinal cord. There the motor neurons activate movements that cause us to react; this is the physical recognition of harm known as nociception. Nearly all animals even those with simple nervous systems experience it because without it animals would be unable to avoid harm and their survival becomes threatened . The second process is called conscious recognition. In humans, this will occur when the sensory neurons in our skin make a second round of connections via the spinal cord to the brain.…
Cognitive psychology is the study of human mental processes that occur within the mind. It looks at such internal processes such as, memory, perception and attention. It came about in the 1950’s as a result of the behaviourist approach being flawed; internal mental processes cannot be observed. Therefore, from this an alternative method of looking at the physiological side of the brain had to emerge. Cognitive neuroscience was then born to identify the neural mechanisms, which are responsible for underlying cognition.…
The event was great and I had many good memories. One of my favorite moment is the first costumer coming to my station. Her name was Evelyn and she was just adorable. We played the parachute activity where we made big and small waves, lifting the parachute up, and going under it. When I saw her smile and having fun, it gave me energy to keep on going with the parachute activity and making sure she is having fun.…
Measuring Brain Activity to Reconstruct Visual Experiences The principle of perpetual evidence states that brain activity is not random, and that the processes we use in mental visualizations are used in visual perception as well. The firing of neurons that occurs when one imagines shooting a free throw are the same neurons that fire when actually doing so. The fact that brain activity is complex and calculated has helped scientists see how the brain functions, and what areas are associated with certain tasks or thoughts. Nishimoto et al conducted a thorough and unprecedented experiment that has helped many understand the functioning of the brain, specifically, how brain activity relates to the perception of visual information (1).…
I can work on transitions between topics and resources, as well as phrasing questions. Although, some of this will improve with practice, some may easier depending on how the conversation flows. During the assessment, I feel like I…
My initial reaction to the study skills assessment I took online was shocked. I agree with my results. I found out that I have relatively good skills in time management. I still need to develop more effective and efficient ways to prioritize and use my time. For concentration/memory I need to develop more effective approaches and strategies to concentrating on and remembering what to study.…
INTRODUCTION For May Semester 2015, OUM learners who taking the subject ABPS3203 Industrial And Organisational Psychology, are required to study on personnel selection, mainly on both, objective and subjective selection techniques. Industrial and organizational psychology, which is also known as I–O psychology, is the scientific study of human behaviour in the workplace and applies psychological theories and principles to organizations (Wikipedia, 2 July 2015). According to Blum & Naylor (1968), industrial and organisational psychology is a fact and the application of psychological principles related to human and organizational or employee. When given reinforcement or punishment, he will learn faster and change his behaviour.…
Perception, attention, and memory are slippery subjects. Perception is the process of recognizing and interpreting sensory stimuli, which is everything taken in through sight, sound, smell, touch and taste (Matlin, 2012). Consequently, it is an imprint that is left in the mind. Attention is the concept that refers to how specific information is processed in the environment (Matlin, 2012).…
