Context Matters

The event was great and I had many good memories. One of my favorite moment is the first costumer coming to my station. Her name was Evelyn and she was just adorable. We played the parachute activity where we made big and small waves, lifting the parachute up, and going under it. When I saw her smile and having fun, it gave me energy to keep on going with the parachute activity and making sure she is having fun. Another moment was when I was doing the bowling activity, and some kids were really enjoying the bowling activity. Despite setting up the pins again and again, I kept on smiling and cheering on the kids to do their best in the bowling activity. When they hit some pins, or a strike, I gave them high fives, and compliment that they are …show more content…
Context matters is knowing the uniqueness of the community where assets, people, the environment, and the history can be different from other community. When we learned that our station was near an open busy street, we figure that we needed an activity that can be safe so a ball or something will not fly out to the street. We learn about the environment that takes place at the event, so in order to insure safe activity, my group analyze different activities whether it can be done. Another example of context matter is the different age group of kids. I learned that with younger kids we should be at their level, by playing small and step by step into doing more challenging tasks. For Evelyn, the adorable and smiling child was 3 years old. My group and I started to do easy task like making small waves, then we move on to larger waves, and then we do more challenging tasks like running underneath the parachute. Evelyn was great and she was able to complete the activity. With older kids like Will who is 10 years old, my group and I knew he can do much more challenging tasks than Evelyn. He was able to understand what we were saying to them and he did the activity

My Barton Malow experience was exciting. My first day I got to meet Jessica and Dana, which were awesome people. We went to visit The Yard for an event, where the workers come together and figure out the solutions for the problems they have while working. At the event I learned so much in one day I got the chance to talk to the workers one on one. Once they found the solutions they went to try it out, which I got to see and record, which was interesting.…

On September 15, I went and took part in el Grito ceremony held at the Miller Outdoor Theater to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. I did not know what was el Grito, so I went to that event with an open mind. The show came after a long speech in both Spanish and English about the Mexican community in Houston and the impact of Harvey on the community. I really enjoy the sense of community that I experienced during that event. People came as a family or with a group of friends.…

Class Connections: 1. Through volunteering at KinderFrogs, I mainly learned that gender can be such a social construct. Meaning, we as humans either consciously or not, typically adhere to the different gender stereotypes that have been presented to us throughout our lives. While we have discussed this concept in great detail in class, we usually focused on the negative aspects of “socializing gender.” For example, we have talked about how boys feel pressured not to cry or play with dolls, girls feel like they can’t be as good at math, and one’s personal appearance determines what gender they are.…

Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a department and grocery stores and see all types of merchandise for their hair, but not many know what the products are right for them. They see products that promise to rejuvenate dry, damaged hair; volumize limp, flat hair; straighten curly hair, and regenerate thinning hair. With my hair being a kinky curl, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and apply them at home. She would give me the same answer every time, “This should only be performed by a professional if you do not want to ruin your hair.”…

In manifold years, the African American community has suffered harshly from institutional racism. As Blacks were forced into becoming chattel property for Whites, they were also dehumanized from their identity. Torture was also included in oppressing blacks as they planted fear into the mindset of African Americans that they cannot even love their own skin color. Lack of opportunities such as educationally, economically, and politically have been the main factors that our community lacks for "success” due from oppression. Philanthropy is a way for our Black Leaders to restore the lack of resources such as meals, housing, educational opportunities, and guidance in the communities.…

My personal learning lens is very much influenced by the constructivism theory of learning, in particular Jerome Bruner’s theory. Aspects of the process include making choices creating theories, and making meaning from the facts, data and knowledge. Bruner postulated three stages of intellectual development.…
