Somebody that has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS), higher functioning disorder on the autism spectrum, will usually display a lack of empathy towards others. One that has AS displays little to no delay in language or cognitive development, does better with routine, and motor development can be delayed, but mostly it is their social interactions with others that makes more of show. Empathy is something that we should display towards others, meaning we should be able to understand and share the feelings of others. What usually is showed is what society has said is socially acceptable, and someone with AS, does not understand what is always acceptable. A person with Asperger’s may think that it is okay to get in someone personal space, such as constant hugging, or touching, while society tells us that it is not acceptable. Impression management role in empathy is that we show or understand how someone else feels because society says that we are too, and that it is the desired characteristic that is wanted among our society. When one lacks in the social areas of life, they do not get how to take part in what society says they are to do, especially when showing others who they are and how they act. While there is impression management we also have role-expectations that society expects us to meet. Role-expectation is the social obligations that makes sure a social need is meet. (Wheat, 2014) We are expected to understand what others want or what they are saying but because this does not happen to someone with AS, they tend to not be able to meet those needs as easily, so they lack in the role-expectations of life, especially in showing others empathy. For self to take place it develops through a process, and it stays changing through out of entire life. But for someone that has AS they do not always develop or follow in the process of self as easily since they just lack being able to understand what others want from them or how others even do the things that they do. This person will develop in others of life, such as spending their time on one set thing learning it and knowing it by heart, when that happens they tend to miss out on what is needed to be able to social connect with others especially peers of their age.
Someone with AS does not understand the desired characteristics that is expected within society, so they usually manage to fail greatly in the impression management towards others, and do not know how to meet the role-expectations that is needed to show empathy. When they lack in those areas they are more and likely going to lack the social product of self, also because they do not have the understanding or social cues that others have to be able to equip them how to act towards
