Love, revenge and regrets are the themes in the stories “Killings” and “IND AFF or Out of Love in Sarajevo”. Spoken in a third person perspective is the “Killings”. However, first person perspective is used in “IND AFF or Out of Love in Sarajevo”. Revenge is understandable in one story and reprehensible in the other. One ends in regret the other avoids regrets. To vilify and humanize flashbacks are used in the“Killings”. However, a historic subplot is used in “IND AFF or Out of Love in Sarajevo”. The settings play a major role in both stories. The story begins with the perception that she is in love with an older man -“Peter might be forty-six, but…I adored him. I loved to be seen with him.” (163), and climaxes with a young woman realization that she is not in love in falling action she leaves him. When Peter asked of the woman “what are you thinking of?”(176). The narrator answers with “’How much I love you,’ I said automatically, and was finally aware how much I lied.” (176). Peter Piper is a married narcissist who is having a sexual liaison with one of his female students. Ironically, Peter is supervising her thesis on varying concepts of morality in duty in the early Greek states. Peter belittles the young woman, by telling her she has “good mind but not a 1st class mind "(172). Unlike Matt and Frank’s attentiveness toward loved ones. Whenever, she attempts to engage Peter in conversation he is inattentive "But he wasn't listening” (174). Peter prefers to us IND AFF rather than inordinately. The narrator explains this. Jean Wisely used abbreviation in his diaries to conceal his affair he was having with an 18 year old girl (174-175). At the climax the young woman ends the relationship without regrets.
