Twain’s purpose in writing The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is to show the lifestyle and culture during the time period of the book. It may have offended “family’s religious, moral or political sensibilities” due the its use of “the notorious “n” word” that is seen in the book “more than 200 times.” (Source A) Nevertheless, the “n” word helped set the visual image of realism. This masterpiece should be continued in schools because it carries the honest history and it allows the students to be educated in knowing the origin of the “n” word and how it was used. The use of language and diction that makes it uncomfortable for students and teachers to read. The book consist of statements such as, “killed a nigger,” and being ashamed because “I’m a nigger.” It depicted “black men as ignorant, inarticulate and uneducated.” (Source B) Even though these statements are very offensive to some audience, the book detailed truly how African American was viewed and treated. In attempting to keep the book, people tried by ‘removing the ‘N word,’ and is successfully removed by Gribben. He removed it because “it’s such a shame that one word should be a barrier between a marvelous reading experience and a lot of readers.”(Source
