Exposure to human flaws and passive aggression to push society for a reform are apparent throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, due to Mark Twain's criticisms on the empathy that society as a whole, lacks to show. Twain critiques how people were treated indecently because of the color of their skin, and people's inability to speak up in times when a moral role model are needed. Mark Twain expresses ill feelings towards racism that can be seen today as a cry for equality. Twain has exaggerated the use of the N* word and the absence of human rights to slaves to prove a point. Throughout Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain creates situations where crowds of people act out of impulse and brutally humiliate, or kill people, without taking the time to reevaluate and realise the severity of their decisions. When the King and Duke had deceived people into seeing their ¨quality” show, the townspeople were angered that they had been conned out of their money, so much so that Huck recalled, ¨I knewed it was them, though they was all over tar and feathers, and didn't look nothing in the world that was human — just looked like a couple of monstrous big soldier”(269). To tar and feather someone as a form of unofficial ¨justice¨ shows the lack of empathizing that is needed to run a well society. In the crowd of people, they couldn't have all believed that it was right to do something that unnecessary as a retaliation for a bad show, but they did it instead to please the voices who were willing to do this act. Similarly, when Huck finds himself to be in the middle of a Grangerford-Shepherdson feud, he asks Buck Grangerford why he wanted to kill Harney Shepherdson, to which Buck replied, ¨why nothing— only it's on account of the feud¨ (127).
