It is very important to have the ability to override your conscience and follow your heart, and this is crucial in the life lessons that Huck learns. Huck goes through many struggles with Jim on the river, such as having the urge to turn Jim in for being a “runaway slave”. In Chapter 31, Huck wrote a short letter to Miss Watson telling her that Jim ran away, and is in Pikesville. But, when he got to traveling with Jim, he had to be set straight. Jim’s “rules” were about the superstitions he had. On one of the very first days Huck and Jim traveled down the river together, Huck thought it would be funny to play a joke on Jim. So, he found a snake and killed it, and put it under Jim’s sleeping bag. The snakes mate ended up biting Jim, but Jim wasn’t concerned about getting the poison out of his foot. He was more concerned about burning the snakeskin and eating the snake meat. Even though Jim’s rules may not be practical, they were still very important to him, and they taught Huck how to follow the rules.
