From “race records” to rhythm and blues, in 1948 Jerry Wexler, a music producer, changed the meaning of the musical term. Although R&B still has elements of soul, funk, and blues in today’s music, R&B has changed drastically since the 50s and 60s (EHow). After decades of R&B progressing, more different styles were being added to R&B which gives the music the beat it has today. “As rhythm and blues combined the elements of jazz, gospel music and the blues, it thus created a very personalized form of melody and rhythm which has become known as one of the outstanding styles of American music,” (New World Encyclopedia). R&B originated from soul and blues, however as time went on, R&B continued to change and progress as it began to incorporate other genres into the music such as hip hop and rock. In addition, since the 1950s, R&B has evolved into many different forms and has stayed popular ever since. “Although the records that appeared on Billboard’s rhythm and blues chart thereafter were in a variety of different styles, the term was used to encompass a number of contemporary forms that emerged at that time,” (Ward). R&B began emerging different sounds into their music and it became more than just rhythm and blues as pop,hip hop, and rap was beginning to be added. Throughout the years, R&B has evolved from classic-soul R&B to hip hop influenced R&B to pop influenced R&B which started the beginning of R&B becoming mainstream (New World Encyclopedia). As different forms and styles of R&B began to develop, R&B was becoming more and more popular, which gave African American more attention in the society and eventually more respect as whites were realizing that African Americans were truly talented individuals whose music influenced the culture and other genres.
