In today’s world women are a huge part of the music industry. They perform all over the world and have a very large following. Women like Beyoncé, Adele and Lady Gaga are just a few ladies that have made it big in the music industry. They have set many records along the way but it wasn’t always like that for women in the music industry. Bessie Smith is “easily the most famous classic blues singer of her time.” (Rockin’ out textbook – page 30) She was a great singer and was like by many people. She spent many years perfecting her voice and singing and she did just that! Bessie Smith decide to combine country blue with jazz to make something different and everyone seemed to enjoy it. She also had her own show Harlem Frolics which was a vaudeville headliner! (Rockin’ out textbook – page 30). Bessie was a great singer and had a few different songs that people loved to listen to. “Downhearted Blues” sold 780,000 copies in only six months and because of this save Columbia records from going bankrupted!
