Leper changed over the length of the novel. Leper could be considered one of the most dynamic characters in the novel. Leper, who was the stereotypical “nerd” of the group was the first to go to war. “I’m almost glad this war came along. It’s like a test, isn’t it, and only the things and the people who’ve been evolving the right way survive” This quote helps to show the change in Leper character. He had this realization that the world from an adult perspective is completely different from the world he was living in. After Leper comes back from the war something changed in him. Leper throughout the novel has a set of opposite personalities and set of traits. Before the war Leper was a nature loving, quite, tedious character. He shocked everyone when he was the first boy at the school to volunteer for the draft. When the boys found out he fled from the army they knew there was something wrong with him. When he came back from the war, he seemed to develop schizophrenic, and bipolar tendencies. "That was when things began to change. One day I couldn't make out what was happening to the corporal's face. It kept changing into faces I knew from somewhere else, and then I began to think he looked like me."
