Animal Farm:How Does Napoleon Stay in Charge? How could a farm be ran without any human control or supervision? Would there be peace or chaos? In the novel Animal farm, George Orwell leads the readers through the lives of animals who have overthrown their human leader. The novel is an political allegory an allegory is a story,poem or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. The novel indicates and reveals the truth about the Russian Revolution of 1917. The first way Napoleon stays in charge through time is by inflicting fear upon the animals. After the revolution on the farm Napoleon takes nine puppies under his wing and begins to train them. The dogs soon become his guard dogs and attack anyone under his single command (Doc B). For example Napoleon's dogs attacked when they were ordered to chase Snowball the pig away. For the first time when animals began to disagree with Napoleon's ways, the dogs easily went into attack mode and growled them into silence. He is making them believe that they only have two choices him or Jones. To begin with Napoleon scapegoats Squealer to make sure that he has no competition of leadership. Napoleon also tries to make squelar look bad. For case in point, Napoleon tell the animals “‘Comrades, do you know...the enemy who has come in the night and overthrown our windmill? SNOWBALL!’ “Snowball has done this thing this traitor has crept here under cover of night and destroyed our work of nearly a year,” (Doc D). Napoleon had the animals convinced that Snowball is the biggest traitor to the animals. He even goes as far as to saying that he was on Jones side all along (Doc E). Propaganda plays a big role in leadership and Napoleon was extremely good at using propaganda to stay on
