The ideas of Socrates affect us today in our day to day lives, because they make us question many things. One of Socrates ideas was to “know thyself, he urged self-examination and questioning of one’s own and others ideas and assumptions” (DiYanni 93). He wanted people to not just agree and think what everyone else thought without questioning what they believed in. He wanted people to question not only our own ideas but also other peoples. “Plato was a pupil of Socrates”(DiYanni 93), this allowed many of Socrates ideas to grow but the difference with Plato is that he took Socrates teachings as well as his own beliefs, and lived his life following these ideas. One of Plato’s ideas is his “ideal of the good”(DiYanni 94). He believed that good is something different for everyone because everyone has different ideas and things that make us happy. This affects us today because we know that we don’t have to follow anyone’s steps and that just because someone wants us to do something we don’t have to do it if we do not feel good about it. We know that we can do whatever we want with our lives as long as it is something that will make us happy and help us reach our best potential.
