In the 1800's a way of life for so many had become the source of so much hatred and the
reason America became a split nation. Slavery had helped many people help develop and
transform the face of America. But with the findings of new crops came the lust to become rich.
Slavery became an item that no one wanted to relinquish at first, but eventually moral issues
with slavery started to be brought to the attention of many Americans, especially the
Northerners.
In 1793 an invention would change to whole debate about slavery. The Cotton Gin was
created in 1793 allowed for the faster production of a Short-Staple Cotton. This invention

Before the
Cotton Gin was created the estimated amount of slaves was 697,897, by 1810 there was 1.2
million. A 70% increase in slaves in America showed the growth that slavery was undertaking.
Though slavery was making a rise in America for a 20 year period it was time for it to
decline. On January 1, 1808 a law was enacted to ban the importation of slaves in the America.
But it was not until around the 1850's that slavery was weakened. It was clear to see that little
by little the north was working diligently to abolish slavery forever. Many abolitionists were
making their voices heard and often went around defending African Americans dreams to one
day become free. And by December 6, 1865 the north - with the assistance of Abraham Lincoln-
abolished slavery.
