House Bill 498: Autism Health Insurance Coverage According the Autism Society of NC, it is estimated that up to 1 out of every 68 children born today has some form of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Evidence suggests that the occurrence rate in North Carolina is even higher than the national average, at 1 in 58. It is more common in boys than girls.” ASD knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries, nor family income, lifestyle, and educational levels do not affect the chance of occurrence” (Autism Society of NC, 2014). While ASD is typically diagnosed in children, it is a lifelong disorder that affects individuals of all ages. On May 15, 2013, the North Carolina House of Representatives voted for a bill that would require state-regulated health insurers to cover common autism therapies, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) (Coyle, July). North Carolina is one of just 18 states yet to reform its insurance laws to require the coverage of autism. The new bill would also cover speech, occupational and physical therapy; behavioral health treatment, would be covered for up to $75,000 a year. On April 28, 2015, The North Carolina Senate voted in favor of statewide autism insurance. Even though it has been voted in, the insurance has not went into effect. With all that being said and why I chose Autism Health coverage as my topic would be because both my children fall on the autism spectrum. My son is ten years old and falls into the high functioning end of the spectrum.…
