Marcus Crede’s criticism towards Angela Duckworth's viewpoints on grit are effective as well as credible considering his usage of facts and statistics to prove his claim. Crede points out how ninety-five percent of cadets make it through Beast Barracks in addition ninety-eight percent of the people with a substantial amount of grit will make it. Claiming this supports Credes claim since he shows the reality along with the truth of individuals going through Beast Barracks, he proves that grit is not a necessity to pass. Also, this claim proves effective considering Duckworth agreed with Credes critiques to do with grit and success as a cadet in Beast Barracks. Another example of Marcus proving Duckworth’s paper is misleading is in point number…
“A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness,” expressed George Graham Vest in September of 1870 (Vest). These sentimental words were used by Vest for the justice of an innocently, killed dog by a pretentious farmer. Four years after the Civil War and Missouri farming begin to return after war-destroyed land. As well as, the rise of Leonidas Hornsby’s family owned business of farming and herding sheep. Although, it was difficult to maintain business due to prowling dogs.…
In the first essay, the student starts by writing a short summary as to what the article is about. The student then lists the two reasons as to why Foer’s argument is persuasive in a straight-to-the-point, clear, and organized manner. This intro was probably the strongest of the four. However, the second paragraph starts off by writing about how many Americans do not want to accept soccer as a pastime as many other countries have. There is little argument made in this paragraph as to how Foer is persuasive; here it is mostly summary of the article.…
Our Lady of the Lake College is a Catholic institution that was created in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who firmly believed that all of creation spoke volumes of God’s love for us. St. Francis was raised in a fairly wealthy family, and it was not until he was captured at battle for two years, that he decided to embark on the glorious journey of knowing Jesus Christ. He began preaching to word of God, and embraced others that were not of his kind. Students who attend Our Lady of the Lake College should be of the same example to others throughout their academic careers. As Franciscans, We live by five core values that are service, reverence and love for all of life, joyfulness of spirit, humility, and justice.…
Rejection characterizes the young American’s experience — carefully composed rejection letters from colleges threaten to fill mailboxes, job offers are extended and then denied, and romantic propositions are regularly shot down. The different scenarios leave one unsatisfied like a musical piece without a resolution, as the young scholar wishes to determine why exactly his four years of effort were incompatible with an admission to Harvard and the high school girl ponders the exact reasoning behind her crush’s denial of her “promposal.” Thus, the importance of addressing the reasoning behind rejection has only grown, as Samuel Johnson exemplifies in his refusal to obtain the archbishop of Canterbury’s patronage for an unknown mother’s son.…
Lukianoff and Haidt appeal to ethos in many different ways, but the main one is by providing the readers with their personal stories, which is provided in separate sidebars. “Greg Lukianoff is a constitutional lawyer and the president and CEO of the Foundation of Individual Rights in Education, which defines free speech and academic freedom on campus, and has advocated for students and faculty involved in many of the incidents this article describes” (45) When looking at the content of this article and what Lukianoff does on a daily basis for his job: it is clear he knows what he is doing when writing this article. After reading this, the reader can already tell Lukianoff has credibility. He also provided a story as to how he ended up writing the article, which provides him even more credibility. “Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist who studies the American culture wars” (45).…
In any school you have attended, in pretty much every grade, plagiarism is something a writer should never do under any circumstances. When reading the essay “Something Borrowed,” Malcolm Gladwell gave insight into the flaws of plagiarism that writers may not have thought about before. The first being that plagiarism is never acceptable (927). The second issue with plagiarism is recognizing the differences that can or cannot “inhibit creativity” (931). Being inspired by another person work can help and guide you to build your own ideas but simply taking their work and claiming it as yours is not okay.…
In incorrectly attributing a piece of text to an individual who didn’t author it is a great misdemeanor, and critical readers and thinkers should be aware of the various forms of plagiarism as well as how they can negatively affect an…
An intellectual is defined as a person who places a high value on or pursues things of interest to the intellect or the more complex forms and fields of knowledge. This definition of an intellectual has been restricted by an educational system to mean indoctrinate students into what the system believes to be “academic”. Gerald Graff’s essay “Hidden Intellectualism” argues that there is knowledge and intelligence beyond what the traditional education system is practicing. Graff contends that incorporating the interests of students into the lesson will help students think more effectively and logically. “Intellectualism” is seen by how well a student does in traditional subjects.…
“Cutting and Pasting: A Senior Thesis by (Insert Name)” is an essay about plagiarism and how cheating in high school and college is becoming more prevalent in classrooms. The structure shown in this essay focuses on a central thesis and is explained in a paragraph outlining reasons more specifically as well as using an outside source of a friend to further prove his thesis. Brent Staples, the author of this article, gives continuous evidence that relates entirely back to his thesis, as it should. This paper focuses on the integrity of the student itself, the threat to the learning process, and also shows how students are quick to the easiest route possible without actually comprehending the material. In the third paragraph, Staples talks about…

lagiarism carries some very severe consequences ranging from disciplinary warnings to expulsions and revocation of credits or degrees. The act of plagiarizing involves passing off someone else’s work as your own and can be done intentionally or unintentionally. When summarizing or paraphrasing a source, it is important to be sure to cite the original source regardless of how closely or different your wording may seem. GCU uses Turn It In as a measure of protection for students as they prepare to submit assignments.…
To (All) the Colleges that Rejected Me In her Op-Ed, “To (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me”, Suzy Lee Weiss argues that colleges lie to applicants with the line: “Just be yourself,” when in reality, they only accept a specific kind of student. Weiss’s argument is weak however, as Weiss fails to use any logos to back up her claim and instead comes off as a close-minded, slightly racist and homophobic privileged teenager simply ranting about not getting in, whom is not the type of student elite colleges seek to accept. Though her argument is weak, Weiss starts off her Op-Ed well, stating in the first sentence: “Like me, millions of high-schoolers… are asking themselves this week how they failed to get into the colleges of their dreams.”…
Furthermore, academic institutions have stated plagiarism as a grave academic offense. In fact, universities and colleges such as George Brown College (GBC) and Harvard University (HU) have developed plagiarism policies to make students aware about its consequences. Even though both policies can explain what can be considered as plagiarism and provide tips how to avoid it, these policies may have different approaches about what would be a suitable sanction for plagiarism. As we will see, Harvard University policy has more severe consequences for students found guilty of plagiarism than George Brown College.…
