Our Lady Of The Lake College Analysis

Improved Essays
Our Lady of the Lake College is a Catholic institution that was created in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who firmly believed that all of creation spoke volumes of God’s love for us. St. Francis was raised in a fairly wealthy family, and it was not until he was captured at battle for two years, that he decided to embark on the glorious journey of knowing Jesus Christ. He began preaching to word of God, and embraced others that were not of his kind. Students who attend Our Lady of the Lake College should be of the same example to others throughout their academic careers. As Franciscans, We live by five core values that are service, reverence and love for all of life, joyfulness of spirit, humility, and justice. All students are God’s help, a …show more content…
I firmly believe that it is important to serve and appreciate the poor, because it is through them that we learn the true meaning of God’s love and mercy. After all, God himself lived a life that was similar to that of a poor man. Christ became poor, so He would be able to “raise us up to the riches of the divine life” He had to offer to His followers. There is more to life than money and material items. In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am. I have gained a newfound love for serving others, and I am thankful that I can express my faith by spreading God’s

To begin, in my community I have come to respect those who help others in food pantries and in special needs schools through personal experience. One day my mom and I took a new route to my grandparents house and we came across the RCS Food Pantry. The next day we pulled up and talked to this sweet lady and she said that we could help package food for the homeless, so every Monday we would go and help out, it was a touching experience to see the look the homeless gave us when we gave them the food. One man I talked to was in the military and wasn't able to get a job because of his PTSD, it was sad the way he ended up but I vowed to help in the ways I knew how.…

As a matter of consideration, welfare may create dependency in children of those adults who are recipients. Family welfare cultures are when welfare received by the parents increases the involvement of children in welfare programs. There are findings that indicate that if parents become welfare dependents there is a probability of their children ultimately become welfare recipients also. Clearly, when the parents are awarded welfare, the likelihood that one of their adult children will participate in welfare by at least 5 percentage points over the next five years, and 11 percentage points over the next decade. These findings suggest that a more demanding screening policy for welfare benefits would not only reduce payouts to current applicants,…

As my time at Rockhurst comes to a close, I have realized that the most important lessons that I have learned has been how to be a well-rounded young man. Since my first day, I have heard that the charge of the Jesuit schools, going back to St. Ignatius of Loyola, is to create “men and women for others” and to instill the ideals of the “grad at grad” repeated countless times. While I did not know what those sayings meant at the time, I now know that Rockhurst has prepared me to be a leader and young man as I start the next chapter of my life. Being a man for others means that I need to put the needs of others and the community in front of my own in context with the five characteristics of the grad at grad.…

For a school/student relationship to be mutually beneficial, values and visions need to be shared and supported. Ursuline’s motto, "I will serve" is almost identical to Wellesley College’s, "Non Ministrari, sed Ministrare," "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister. " Ursuline’s traditions of excellence in education, respect for the uniqueness of the individual, development of the whole person, community and family spirit, cultivation of leadership qualities and willingness to serve others, is similar to Wellesley’s mission of providing an excellent liberal arts education for women who will make a difference in the world. Jennifer has grown up in a Catholic home that embraces and tries to embody these values while leading by example.…

Service can be seen as a burden, or as an enlightening experience. This year I began to comprehend the impact service can have, if you put your heart into it. This year I learned why service is important, how service can change me, and how God's face can be seen in service. For people who serve it is evident that the more you work God, the more you want to work for God, and the better you feel about it. I attend a massive church, one of the biggest in northern Virginia, McLean Bible Church.…

Amanda Stevenson Dr. Huber BA 240 22 January 2016 Topic: How Christians Can Help the Poor in a World of Corruption Historically, one trend among society has been the idea that the rich hold an obligation to help the poor. In the past, the rich took care of the poor because they had the ability to do so, however, as the world has progressed, society has become more prone to succumbing to ever present temptations. Economically, this temptation could arise from the misuse of financial aid and/or prosperity driven efforts, as well as the potential to force those unwillingly into helping the less fortunate.…

Service never really meant much to me until a couple of years ago. I remember the exact moment I knew that I had a duty to help homeless people in December of 2013. I was driving with my friends in down town Salt Lake on our way home from a Christmas party. It was about 2 in the morning and it was absolutely freezing outside. I was joking, singing, and having a great time with my other three friends in the car.…

What does it mean to be a “good Christian”? Is it measured by the number of times you’ve attended Sunday mass? Or is it about the purity of your intentions as a person? Maybe being one with Jesus Christ in body and soul. As a child, it was hard to understand and process all the scriptures and verses taught to us. My fondest childhood memory is attending church with my mother doing the sign of the cross on myself and dousing in much more holy water than necessary.…

My view of poverty was shaped and forged by my Catholic upbringing. The Church teaches a preferential option for the poor, that we should help the poor. (usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings, 2014) In addition to this, the Church requires a vow of poverty for the clergy; the people that we looked up to, the nuns and the priests, had all taken a vow of poverty. Poverty could be noble, living simply so that others might…
